Resist evil forces dishonouring Islam, PM urges Alem-Ulema

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today called upon the Alem-Ulema to resist the evil forces undermining Islam by unleashing terrorist and militant acts, saying that there is no room for terrorism and militancy in Islam, agencies report. “Islam is a religion of peace, and there is no place for subversive acts, terrorism and militancy in it. So I would like to urge the respected Alem-Ulema to resist the evil forces dishonouring Islam and alert the mass people about them,” she said.  Sheikh Hasina said Islam is being dishonoured internationally due to those who are engaged in terrorist and militant acts and who burn people to death and torch holy Quran. “We can never allow those undermining Islam. So I call upon all to stay alert to this end,” she said.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing a function on the occasion of the 40th founding anniversary of Islamic Foundation and the National Imam Conference at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre here this morning.  Religious Affairs Minister Principal Motiur Rahman chaired the function, while Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Religious Affairs Ministry Bazlul Haque Harun was present as the special guest.  Secretary of the ministry Dr Chowdhury Mohammad Babul Hasan delivered the welcome address and Director General of Islamic Foundation Shamim Mohammad Afzal highlighted the activities of Islamic Foundation.

On behalf of the trained Imams, Maulana Abul Kashem spoke at the function. At the function, the Prime Minister handed over prizes among the best Imams and the winners of the National Children-Juveniles Cultural Competition.  Accusing again BNP-Jamaat of committing genocide in the name of hartals and blockades, Sheikh Hasina said they are killing people by pouring petrol and hurling bombs.  “It is tantamount to genocide and they are continuing to commit it. They are burning CNG drivers, bus drivers and helpers to death. Even the pregnant women and children are not being spared from their hand,” she said.   The Prime Minister said when the country is advancing towards development and prosperity, at that time BNP-Jamaat clique is continuing to commit anarchy to impede country’s uplift. “It is very unfortunate and we don’t want the country to be taken towards destruction,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina said the BNP-Jamaat clique enforced nonstop hartals and blockades on the Eid-e-Miladunnabi Day, and during Biswa Ijtema, the second largest Muslim congregation after the holy Hajj.  “They made attacks on the vehicles of the devotees and hurled bombs. None could do such a big undermining of Islam,” she said.  The Prime Minister said the only work of the BNP-Jamaat is to  kill people and taint the image of the country by unleashing  terrorist and militant acts. Their only work is to save war  criminals and those who violated women during the War of  Liberation, she said.

She noted that there is nothing to be heinous like burning  people to death. “But the BNP-Jamaat is committing such misdeeds. I don’t know what type of Islam they believe in and whom they  want to make happy by unleashing such atrocities,” she said. The Prime Minister urged the Alem-Ulema to compare the works of Awami League and the BNP, saying that her  government did a lot for the development of Islam.  On the other hand, BNP did nothing for Islam except resorting  to killing, militancy and terrorism. “After murdering the people,
their hands were so extended that they did not hesitate to kill  two Awami League parliament members,” she said.

“They also tried to kill me by making the grisly grenade  attacks on August 21. But I narrowly escaped the attack as the  Almighty Alllah saved me on that day,” she said. The Prime Minister said she always believes that Allah  sends a human being for accomplishing a work. “The Almighty  saves him or her until the work is finished,” she said. Sheikh Hasina said she is frequently listening to the  threat, but she is moving by keeping trust in Allah. “My father,  mother, grandfather and my family used to do any work by keeping  trust in Allah. I am also moving with that trust. I could  accomplish the work Insha Allah for the country and its people as  long as Allah keeps me alive,” she said.

Paying rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu  Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Prime Minister said the contributions  of the Father of the Nation to preaching and expansion of Islam  during his three and a half years government was a rare instance  in the contemporary Muslim world. Sheikh Hasina said Bangabandhu established the Islamic   Foundation to spread the real teaching and essence of Islam among  the people. He also banned liquor, gambling, horse race and  unsocial activities by framing laws.

The Father of the Nation reorganized and expanded the  Madrasa Education Board and declared public holidays on Eid-e-  Miladunnabi, Shab-e-Qadar and Shab-e-Barat. He also allocated  lands for the Biswa Ijtema and expansion of Kakrail Mosque. The Prime Minister said the politics of killing, coup and  conspiracy started after the assassination of Father of the
Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The illegal government  emerged militancy by ignoring the essence of Islam, she said.  After long 21 years, she said, the Awami League government  assumed office again in 1996 and launched work for the  development of Islam following the footprint of the Father of the  Nation.

During the period, we transferred 43 district offices of  Islamic Foundation their all manpower to the revenue sector. “We  also constituted the Imam Muazzin Welfare Trust and started the  beautification and expansion work of the Baitul Mukarram National  Mosque,” she said.  The Prime Minister said her government took mosque-based  child and mass education programmes side by side with  strengthening the Islamic organizations across the country.  But after coming to power in 2001, she said, the BNP-Jamaat  alliance stopped the programmes taken by the Awami League  government. They patronised emergence of the militancy and killed  22,000 leaders and workers of Awami League.

The Prime Minister said the BNP-Jamaat carried out the  grisly grenade attack on August 21 in 2004 and synchronized bomb  blasts across the country on August 17 in 2005.
“They launched brutal torture on the minority communities  and hoisted the national flag in the vehicles of the Jamaat  leaders. They polluted Islam, the religion of peace, by using
state power,” she said.   Sheikh Hasina said after coming to power again, the Awami  League government restored peace in the country by eliminating  militancy and terrorism and reestablishing the people’s rights.
