Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr AKM Nurun Nabi has said the philosophy of Rokeya should be highlighted for women empowerment, Agencies report. “The philosophy and ideals of Rokeya should be implemented properly for establishing freedom of the womenfolk, their empowerment, rights and dignity in every sphere of national life,” he said here on Friday.
The VC was addressing a post-rally discussion arranged in observance of the Rokeya Day- 2016, the 136th birth and 84th death anniversaries of pioneer of women renaissance in the sub- continent Begum Rokeya, at the varsity’s cafeteria here as chief guest.
With Head of the Department of Women Studies Humayun Kabir in the chair, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies Dr Ferdous Rahman, Professor of the Department of Bengali Dr Sorifa Salowa Dina, addressed among others.
Earlier, the VC placed wreaths at the portrait of Begum Rokeya at the Independence Memorial in the campus before leading a rally participated by teachers, students, officials and employees of the university in the campus and adjoining areas.
Dr Nabi, also a population scientist, said great woman Rokeya conducted her activities not only for women renaissance in the then colonial society, but she expanded her huge endeavour for renaissance of the humanity as a whole. Recalling the unparallel contribution of Rokeya, he said she was the first woman to realise absolute necessity of ensuring female education and human rights of womenfolk for their real development, dignity and civilized status.
“Rokeya is our national pride, idol of women community and a world leader,” he said and stressed on spreading her philosophy among the young generation for realising her dream through ensuring modern education for women and their empowerment. The VC also announced that six brilliant students, with one each from six facilities, would be awarded with Rokeya Medal every year and Rokeya Studies would be incorporated in the curriculum of every department of the university soon.
