A RETIRED army major died after breaking his neck when he fell from a hospital trolley as staff took him for an X-ray, a court heard, agencies report. Second World War veteran James Fyfe, 90, was on a trolley with sides that were not secured.

It was poorly maintained, corroded in places and had parts missing. Major Fyfe, of Earley, Berks, went to the nearby Royal Berkshire Hospital with a suspected broken hip on March 27, 2011.

But he never recovered from the fall and died of pneumonia on April 21. Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust admitted a breach of duty and apologised to the family at Reading crown court.

It was fined £200,000 with £76,305 costs but is £29.6million in the red so has four years to pay.
