SI closed over 60-year-old beaten to death

A sub-inspector was closed yesterday over allegation of police beating up an old man to death in Moulvibazar early yesterday. The victim is Sadir Miah, 60, of Kalenga village in Kamalganj upazila of the district.

His son Shipon Miah is an accused in a case filed with Kamalganj Police Station, said Mullah Md Sahin, assistant superintendent of police of Moulvibazar. Police went to raid Sadir Miah’s house to nab Shipon, he said.

Sadir’s wife Safina Begum said a police team carried out the raid around 4:00am yesterday. Not seeing Shipon at home at the time, the law enforcers dragged his father out and beat him up.

Having been beaten severely, her husband died on the spot, Safina added. Local people brought out a procession and held a rally in the area to protest the incident.

Holding police responsible for the killing, they issued a 24-hour ultimatum for suspension of Sub-inspector Nazrul Islam. Otherwise, the agitating people said, they would lay siege to the police station and announce an indefinite strike.

“The SI has been closed. An investigation is going on. Action will be taken against the policemen as per the report,” Md Shahjalal, superintendent of police in Moulvibazar, told this correspondent.
