A total of 4577 Bangladeshis have been arrested in various countries of the world for different reasons, Parliament was told on Tuesday, reports UNB. Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain gave the information while responding to a written question of Nizam Uddin Hazari (Feni-2). Of the total arrested, 2131 Bangladeshi citizens are now in Malaysia, 467 in Saudi Arabia, 1051 in UAE, 75 in Kuwait, 13 in Bahrain, 120 in Iraq, 5 (five) in South Korea, 14 in Turkey, 104 in Lebanon, 13 in Japan, 40 in Maldives, 501 in Oman, 20 in Egypt, 17 in Iran and 6 (six) in Bulgaria.
The Minister informed the House that the law enforcing agencies of the respective countries have arrested these Bangladeshi nationals for various reasons including killing, rape, theft, robbery, fighting, burglary, drug peddling, kidnapping, expiry of work permit, overstay, misuse of work permit and non-renewal of residential permit. He said that Bangladesh high commissions or embassies provide legal assistance for their release and bring these people back.
