Speed limit on highways set at 80kmph

The authorities on Monday fixed the highest speed limit of vehicles at 80-kilometre on highways and 40-kilometre in Dhaka and other cities.
The decision was taken in the 23rd meeting of the National Road Safety Council at the Engineers’ Institute auditorium in the capital.
The decision would be implemented after issuing circular over the matter, said officials.
Road transport and bridges minister, Obaidul Quader, said the drivers must have at least half-an-hour rest each time after continuous driving of five hours.
He urged the owners to ensure at least eight hours’ rest for drivers everyday and at least 48 hours’ rest in a week.
Shipping minister Shajahan Khan, state minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Anisul Huq, Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokon present among others in the meeting, agencies report.
