Unidentified miscreants gunned down the wife of a superintendent of police(SP) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) at the city’s GEC intersection on Sunday morning, agencies report.
The deceased was identified as Mahmuda Khanam, 33, wife of Babul Akhter, a resident of Nasirabad Housing area. Babul who was promoted as police super just last month was in Dhaka. Earlier, he was CMP’s additional deputy commissioner.
Mohiuddin Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, said a gang of three miscreants riding a motorcycle hit Mahmuda with their bike as she had been there to get her son, Mahir Akhter, into a bus of Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College around 7.15am.
As Mahmuda fell down after having hit by the bike, the gunmen opened fire on her, leaving her dead on the spot. There might be a militant link in the incident as Babul had an important role in a crackdown on religious terrorism, the OC added.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Sunday said militants might have killed police officer Babul Akhter’s wife having failed to kill him. “Babul Akhter is an honest, efficient and brave police officer. His active role in combating militancy is praiseworthy. Militants killed his wife as they couldn’t kill Babul,” said the minister at a press briefing after a programme at Baitul Ijjat Border Guard Training Centre and School in Satkania of Chittagong.
Terming the murder incident as heinous and brutal, Asaduzzaman said stern action will be taken against those involved in the killing. Detectives have started working to find out the motive behind the murder which will help trace the killers, he said.
