Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to pay an official visit to Bangladesh in the middle of July, Agencies report.
Sources from the ministry of foreign affairs said that the Sri Lankan president is likely to reach Dhaka on July 13, on a 4-day visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
However, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are expected to sign several agreements during the visit. Earlier, in November last year, both the countries gave consent to sign Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Till present, no enhanced development was marked in boosting trade among the both SAARC countries, though having huge expectancy. However, it is now being expected that new doors will open in trade ties between the countries through Sri Lankan President’s visit this time.
Once the deals are completed, Bangladesh could export different products including drugs, cement, and paper, in comparatively reduced price.
However, foreign ministry sources further said that they will propose Sirisena for leasing some land to Bangladesh as Bangladeshi farmers could harvest there.
Sirisena’s upcoming visit will be the first official visit to Bangladesh since he was elected president in 2015.
