The High Court on Sunday (Nov 26) directed authorities concerned to take action against surgeon, Hosne Ara, responsible for delivering one of Khadiza Begum’s twin babies by Caesarean section and then stitching the womb leaving the other fetus inside, Agencies report.

The court also ordered the managing director of the diagnostic center, Md Mojibur Rahman, to give Tk 3 lakh to Khadiza Begum as compensation.

An HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Jahirul Hoque ordered Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) to take these actions.

The HC also ordered the Directorate General of Health Services to investigate the incident and to take legal action over the incident.

Sheikh Hosne Ara, a doctor of Gauripur Life Hospital and Digital Diagnostic Center in Comilla, conducted the surgery on Khadiza Begum in September this year.

On Oct 29, the same HC bench summoned three people including physician Hosne Ara to appear before it on Nov 7 after taking some news reports into cognizance on the abrupt medical operation.

According to news reports, on September 18, Khadija Akter, wife of one expatriate Bangladeshi Awal Hossain from Algirchar village under Homna upazila, was admitted to Life Hospital & Digital Diagnostic Center.

She gave birth to a baby girl undergoing a C-Section (caesarean) operation on that day. Afterwards, relatives of Khadija informed the hospital that she is pregnant with twins.

But in response, Sheikh Hosne Ara, the doctor who conducted the surgery, said that it was not a baby but a tumor.  Khadija was released thus from the hospital with no further operation, after four days in hospital.

However, she started to feel several physical complications after returning home. After undergoing further medical test 15 days later, she became confirmed that doctors stitched her wombs leaving one of the twins inside.

On October 25, she gave birth to a dead male child at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). She is now undergoing treatment at DMCH.
