Sunita Williams turns 50: Some facts you should know about her

She holds the record for the maximum number of spacewalks by a woman and is one of the most experienced space walkers in the world. She is Sunita Williams. The Indian-American astronaut, Sunita Williams, was born on September 19, 1965, according to India Today.

As she turns 50 today, we have collected some very interesting facts you should not miss about her:

  • Sunita Williams was born in Ohio
  • Williams’ paternal ancestry is from Mehsana district in Gujarat
  • Williams graduated from Needham High School in Massachusetts in the year 1983
  • She also holds a bachelor’s degree in physical science from the United States Naval Academy and a master’s degree in Engineering Management
  • She was inducted in the United States Navy in May, 1987
  • Just after a six-month temporary assignment, she was designated a Basic Diving Officer
  • In 1992, she was the Officer-in-Charge of a Hurricane Andrew relief operation
  • She has more than 3,000 flight hours in her credit and in over 30 aircraft types
  • It was in 1998, when Williams began her Astronaut Candidate training
  • Williams was launched into the International Space Station on December 9, 2006, to join the Expedition 14 crew
  • It was later reported that among the personal items Williams took with her into the space were a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a figure of Hindu deity Ganesha, and samosas
  • She did her spacewalks on January 31, February 4, and February 9, 2007
  • Sunita Williams holds the record for the maximum number of spacewalks by a woman, as she has done around seven spacewalks
  • Sunita Williams also holds the record for the longest amount of spacewalk time by a woman, which is 50 hours and 40 minutes
  • Williams has spent around 322 days in her two shuttle missions
  • Sunita Williams is ranked five as the most experienced spacewalker
  • On April 16, 2007, Sunita Williams became the first person to run the Boston marathon from space
  • Sunita Williams was the Commander of Expedition 13 and she also worked as a Flight Engineer for Expedition 32
  • Williams was awarded the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vishwa Pratibha Award in the year 2007.
