NASSAU, Bahamas — A small plane has gone down in the Atlantic Ocean in the Bahamas, but all five people on board are safe after spending several hours in a life raft. The Bahamian government says the five were rescued by the Royal Bahamas Defense Force after their single engine Cessna went down late Monday about 15 miles southeast of Nassau.

“All passengers appeared to be in good health and survivors also have family who are members of the Defence Force,” the Royal Bahamas Defense Force said on its Facebook page. The survivors included an 8-month-old baby.  A government statement Tuesday reported that they were examined at a hospital in Nassau and released. All five are from the Bahamas. Their plane had taken off from Crooked Island.

A U.S. Coast Guard air crew was called in to help with the search and spotted the five people floating on a life raft about nine miles off Nassau.
