A suspected militant was killed in a joint raid, ‘Operation August Bite’, at a building in Dhaka’s Panthapath area on Tuesday, Agencies report.

The deceased is Saiful Islam, student of Khulna BL College and resident of Dumuria upazila of Khulna. Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque made this statement in a press briefing following the incident.

The IGP also claimed that the militant allegedly committed suicide as he blasted himself during the raid at room no 301on the 4th floor of Panthapath’s Olio Green Heaven Hotel in the morning.

The militant had planned an attack on Bangabandhu’s residence at Dhanmondi road 32 on the eve of 15 August, he claimed. Earlier in the day, police cordoned off a hotel in Pantapath area of Dhaka city.

Law enforcement officials suspected the building to be yet another militant hideout. A militant suspect was said to have taken shelter in the hotel Olio Green Heaven, near Square Hospital.

Members of the police and its special SWAT unit were deployed around the hotel and five other buildings there, said witnesses. A unit of fire services was kept ready for a possible operation.

Blasts and gunshots were then heard from the scene as the wall of one of the floors of the building that the police cordoned off, collapsed in a major blast.
