THE former girlfriend of disgraced footballer Adam Johnson has told friends “the truth broke my heart” after going to his trial for child sex offences, The Sun reports. Stacey Flounders, mother to the former England international’s 13-month-old daughter Ayla Sofia, had initially stayed with him for the sake of their family.
However, halfway through his trial at Bradford Crown Court, she told the jury that they would just “remain friends”. According to the Daily Mirror, she also told pals that she attended the legal proceedings to “find answers” but could not stay with him after the truth of his behaviour was revealed. Johnson is set for a stretch behind bars after being convicted this week of sexual activity with the 15-year-old girl.
His sentencing will take place in two weeks’ time but, after being found guilty of the crime, Judge Jonathan Rose told him: “You must understand that when you return here at the end of March you will receive a substantial prison sentence.” After the jury gave their verdict, the footballer shook his head in the dock while gasps went up from the public gallery as he was found guilty of one charge and cleared on another.
Stacey showed no emotion as the verdicts were returned after the jury spent more than nine hours deliberating. During evidence she had given earlier in the trial, she wiped away tears as she described how the 28-year-old had told her “everything” after he returned home from police questioning.
She also revealed that during their heart-to-heart he told her about “the other women that he cheated on me with”. Johnson’s lawyer then asked her if he had named any of those women, she replied: “Just one. He wouldn’t tell me the other names.” When asked how many there were, she said: “Quite a few.”
