Amid the ongoing transport strike in the south-western region, transport owners and workers threatened to enforce a countrywide indefinite transport strike if their demands, including that of the release of three staff of ‘Shohag Paribahan’, are not met by 2-3 days, UNB reports. They came up with the threat at a meeting of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation in Jessore town on Saturday, the 5th day of the indefinite transport strike in south-western region on the same ground.
Central joint secretary of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation Sadek Hossain and joint convenor of Khulna divisional Malik-Sramik Oikya Parishad Azizul Alam Pintu were present at the meeting. Bus services between the capital and 10 southeastern districts of Khulna division have remained suspended due to the strike enforced by Paribahan Malik-Sramik Oikya Parishad since Tuesday.
Their demands include withdrawal of Modhukhali Police Station officer-in-charge and unconditional release of the three staff of ‘Sohagh Poribahan’. Earlier, a gang of robbers swooped on a Benapole-bound bus of ‘Shohag Paribahan’ from Dhaka in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur district early Tuesday. The bandits looted cash, ornaments and other valuables from the bus passengers.
Later, police arrested three staff of the bus — driver Ainal, his helper Apu and checker Ratan — in connection with the incident.
