Two more killed in alleged shootouts

Two more persons were killed in separate incidents of reported gunfights with members of law enforcement agencies early Monday as anti-narcotics crackdown continues across the country, Agencies report.

Of them, one was killed in Sirajganj and the other in capital Dhaka.

a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with detective branch (DB) of police in Raipur Railway Station area of Sirajganj municipality early Monday.

The deceased is Shahin Reza, 35, son of certain Danesh Sheikh.

A team of DB police conducted the drive in the area around 2:00am following a tip-off, said Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.

When the team reached the area, the ‘drug traders’ reportedly opened fire on the law enforcers. The law enforcers then fired back in self defence, leaving Shahin dead on the spot, he added.

According to police, three policemen were also injured during the gunfight. Besides, DB police recovered a foreign pistol and 307 yaba pills from the spot.

Another man was killed in what the DB police called gunfight in Bhatara of capital’s Gulshan early Monday.

The deceased is Shariful Islam, 28.

Bhatara police station officer-in-charge Mobarak Hossain told Prothom Alo that DB police disclosed nothing about the gunfight.

Bullet-hit Shariful was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty physicians declared him dead early Monday.

This correspondent could not verify the law enforcement’s version of the incident independently as no version of it was available immediately either from any witness or from any member of the victim’s family.
