Two women were killed and four others injured as a railway oil tanker hit a passenger bus at city’s Sholoshahar number two rail crossing gate in Panchlaish area Monday morning, agencies report.
One of the deceased was identified as Mariam, 28. The identity of the other could not be known immediately. Officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station, Mohiuddin Mahmud, said the Hathazari-bound train hit the BRTC bus in the area at around 11am, leaving one woman dead on the spot and five others injured.
Another woman succumbed to her injuries when she was being taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), medical police outpost sources said.
The injured are now under treatment at CMCH. Railway police and eyewitnesses said the BRTC bus was moving towards
Sholoshahar from Oxygen point and was on the rail crossing before signal was raised.
The bus was hit by the tanker train as it could not budge because of traffic jam on the road. Seven units of the Fire service removed the bus, almost smashed, after an hour long efforts.
Rail communications between Chittagong city – Chittagong University- Nazirhat and Dohajari resumed after nearly two hours. Railway eastern zone, Chittagong has already formed a four member probe committee headed by its divisional transport officer, Feroz Iftekhar.
The other members of the committee are – divisional engineer Rafiqul Islam, Divisional signal and telecommunication Mohammad Selim and mechanical engineer (Loco) Saiful Islam.
The committee has been asked to submit its report by next three days.
