In response to a request from the government of Bangladesh, the UN system in Bangladesh has mobilized an international team of experts to support the cleanup efforts of the oil spill in the Sundarbans.
A United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team has arrived in Dhaka to support the ground work in coordination with the government, a UN press release said today.
The team will also conduct an assessment and advise on recovery and risk reduction measures.
The oil spill took place on December 9 this year. Subsequently, the government has requested UNDP on December 15 to support the ongoing government’s efforts. The advance team arrived on December 17. Additional team members are expected over the weekend.
