A PRIMARY school’s ex-deputy head was jailed for 17½ years for raping and abusing girl pupils, The Sun reports. Roger Caffrey trapped them in store cupboards or put his hand up their skirts during lessons as they read aloud at his desk.
Victims included a nine-year-old he repeatedly raped at his house. Police missed a chance to nail Caffrey when a girl of 19 he also raped there reported it in 1994. He had lured her there before pinning her to his marital bed. But police dropped the investigation for lack of evidence.
It was only following his retirement that former pupils at Northgate primary in Nottingham — where Caffrey was deputy from 1978 to 1984 — came forward. Many were at the city’s crown court as 70-year-old Caffrey, who now lives in Tankerness, Orkney, was convicted of three rapes and 12 indecent assaults involving a total of seven girls.
The jury sent a note to the judge praising those who testified, some of whom were in tears. It ended: “We hope this verdict brings some closure.” Judge Timothy Spencer QC told the pervert: “You calculated they were ripe for this sort of abuse and you calculated that they would not tell.”
