Viqarunnisa Noon School and College has suspended its morning shift head teacher Zinnat Ara amid public anger over the ‘suicide’ of a student, Agencies report.
The teacher was suspended on Tuesday as part of an effort to ensure a proper investigation into the death of Aritree Adhikari, said Principal Nazneen Ferdous.
Aritree was found dead — her body hanging from a ceiling fan — in her room. The principal of the school allegedly insulted her and the parents of the ninth-grader because she had cheated in an exam.
Her relative Soumitra Sarker had said earlier that Aritree took her parents to the school on Monday, and the principal insulted them. Principal Nazneen denied the allegation.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of Education and the Viqarunnisa authorities set up two panels with a three-day deadline to turn in investigation reports over the incident.
“The morning shift head teacher has been suspended for the sake of investigation,” the principal said.
The suicide sparked fury among students and guardians and turned the spotlight on the controversial handling of students by one of the top schools in Bangladesh.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid visited the institution and promised action against those responsible for the death of the student after investigation.
