Awami League mayoral candidate Dr Salina Hayat Ivy was leading the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls as shown in the latest unofficial results, Agencies report. According to unofficial results of 116 centres out of total 174 available till filing of this report, Ivy bagged 127,113 votes while BNP contestant Sakhawat Hossain Khan polled 61,874.
The vote counting began after polling, which began at 8am, closed at 4 pm. Sakhawat cast his vote at NarayanganjAdarsha School polling centre at Jamtala of Majdair area in the morning while Ivy cast her vote at Shishubagh Primary School polling centre in Paschim Deubhog area around 9:45 am.
According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, there was no report of any violence during the voting. The voter turnout, especially of female one, was huge as people were seen standing in long queues to cast their votes. Though the presence of female voters was high in the morning, it decreased to some extent at noon.
The NCC election was considered vital ahead of the reconstitution of the next Election Commission that will conduct the next parliamentary polls. It is the country’s first city election that is being held along the political party line.
