Women fighters in IAF just for five years, government tells House
After according approval to women in fighter streams of the IAF, the government on Friday clarified in Parliament that the decision is valid only for five years on an experimental basis, The Indian Express reports.
Replying to a question, Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh said: “All women pilots in the IAF are cleared for all operational roles including Low Level Tactical Flying, Para Drop, Air Maintenance (Northern & Eastern Sector) and Special Heli-Borne Operation (SHBO). Women pilots also undergo jungle and snow survival course.”
According to a written reply to a question, women trainees undergoing Stage-I training would be assessed for their suitability. Based on the suitability and willingness, these trainees would be selected for further training, ultimately being commissioned into the fighter stream in June, 2016.
