The World Environment Day was observed in the country as elsewhere around the world on Tuesday with a call to refuse those cannot be reused, Agencies report.
The theme of this year’s day was: ‘Beating plastic pollution’ while the slogan: ‘If you can’t reuse it, refuse it’. Different organisations observed the day with elaborate programmes.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) organised a seminar at the Jatiya Press Club on the occasion.
Speaking at the programme, Environment and Forests Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud called for raising public awareness globally to save the nature and the environment.
“The use of plastic is not only posing threat to the environment but also to human health,” he said. The World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment.
First celebrated in 1973, it has now become a widely recognised day celebrated in more than 100 countries around the globe.
The day is celebrated every year on June 5 throughout the world with different themes to create awareness about the importance of protecting planet Earth and Mother Nature.
