A young man was killed in police firing and 20 others, including two with bullets, were injured in a clash between police and villagers following the arrest of an accused at Janata Bazar in Sadar upazila on Thursday evening, UNB reports.
Quoting locals, police said a team of plainclothes police arrested Mizanur Rahman, an accused in a case, and started beating him mercilessly at Janata Bazar in the evening.
At one stage, as local people tried to prevent the policemen from beating Mizanur, the cops took him to the local police camp. When the mob went to the camp to release Mizanur, a clash ensued between them and police.
Police opened fire to the crowd, leaving Noman,18, son of Jamadar, dead on the spot and a woman and a child injured with bullets. A chase and counter-chase took place during the clash that left 18 more people, including a policeman, injured.
Of the injured, four, including bullet-wounded Nirob, 12, and Amiron, 55, and Sub-inspector Gouranga were rushed to Sadar Hospital. Following the incident, the agitated people also blocked Janata Bazar Road by placing logs.
Mamunur Rashid, assistant superintendent of police, (Sadar Circle), said the mob broke into the police camp and tried to snatch away arms from police.
