19 more injured, probe body formed
Gas pipeline explosion at a house at Chattogram’s Patharghata area has claimed 7 lives Sunday morning, Agencies report.
19 more has been injured in the incident.
Some of the deceased are identified as Nuril Islam (31) of Ukhia under Cox’sBazar, Anne Barua(40), head teacher of Patiya Meherati Govt. Primary School, Juleka Khanam Farjana (30) of Patharaghata, her son Atikur Rahman (08) and Md.Sukkur (50).
The injured among others are Arpita Nath, Sandya Nath daughter of Kajal Nath of Rangunia now under treatment at CMCH Burn Unit, Dorin Trisha Gomez (23), an assistant teacher of local Saint Jones Grammar School, Yusuf(40), Ismail(30),Abdul Hamid (42), Md. Arif(22),Sandya Rani Devi (35) and Nazir Ahmed.
The explosion occurred on the ground floor of a 4-storey building “Kunjamoni” locaed at Brick Field Road, at around 9 am ,OC Md Mohsin of Kotwali Police Station said..
“ 19 people were rushed for treatment to Chattogram Medical College And Hospital(CMCH) where 7 were pronounced dead by on duty doctors” he informed adding some pedestrians also suffered injuries as the outer wall of the building collapsed during the explosion..
Besides, a shop closed to the building was also damaged in the blast.
When contacted, Purnachandra Mutsuddi, deputy director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence told News Today that the incident may have caused due to the gas riser of the building which is located beside the boundary wall on the ground floor of the structure.
However, Hasan Shariar Kabir , director of Chattogram Health Directorate quoting injured residents said the explosion occurred when a matchstick was being lighted in a room of the building.“
Ismail Bali, councillor of Patharghata 34 No ward told this correspondent, “ As the explosion occurred, the entire building shook up prompting residents to rush out of the building when pieces of a boundary wall hit some pedestrians”.
The owners of the four-storey building, Amal Barua and Titu Barua, live on the top floor.
A five-strong panel headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner AJM Shariful Hasan has been formed to investigate the incident, said Chattogram’s Deputy Commissioner Md Iliyas Hossain.
The district administration provided Tk 20,000 in assistance to the families of each of the dead, he added.
Chattogram City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin later visited the scene, and said the authorities
will pay the funeral expenses for the dead and the city corporation will also bear the medical expenses of those injured in the explosion.
