AL picks leaders for Dhaka north, south

Bazlur Rahman and Abu Ahammed to lead the two units

The Awami League has picked Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and Abu Ahammed Mohammad Mannafi to lead its Dhaka metropolitan North and South units respectively, Agencies report.

SM Mannan Kochi and Humayun Kabir were named general secretaries of the two units during its triennial conference at the Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday.

Rahman was a vice-president and Kochi was a joint general secretary of the immediate past committee of Dhaka North Awami League while Mannafi and Humayun were vice-presidents for Dhaka South.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader announced the names of the new leaders after party chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the council.

The units held their last council on Apr 10, 2016.

This time the Awami League has completed selecting new leaders of its important units and affiliates ahead of its national council scheduled for Dec 20-21.

It comes after many leaders of the Awami League, its affiliates Jubo League, Krishak League and Swechchhasebak League have been arrested or accused of making money from illicit casinos, corruption, extortion and tender rigging.
