A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Ukto village of Chuadanga sadar upazila early Saturday, report Agencies.
Deceased Ruhul Amin, 48, son of a certain late Mofiz Uddin, resident of sadar municipal area is a drug trader and also accused in 16 drug related cases, said police.
Being tipped off that a consignment of drug would be smuggled through the village, a patrol team of police took position at a bamboo grove, said Abu Zihad Fakhrul Alam Khan, officer-in-charge of sadar police station.
When a gang of drug traders carrying sacks full of drugs was crossing the area around 2:00am, the police team challenged them, he said.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.
After 15-minute of gunfight, when the drug traders fled the scene, police recovered bullet-hit Ruhul Amin and took him to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where physicians declared him dead.
Three policemen including a sub-inspector were also injured, said the OC adding that the team also recovered a one-shooter gun, two round bullets, two sharp weapons and a sack of phensedyl from the spot.
According to the human rights organisation, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), at least 421 people were killed in alleged gunfights, crossfires or shootouts with the law enforcement agencies in 2018.
In January and February of 2019, the number of such killing was at least 50, the rights body said on its website.
